The Scorecard Nobody Showed You

August 07, 20261 min read

You were excellent all year.
Only a few moments got remembered.

Some of your best thinking this year happened in a hallway.

Somebody nodded.
Somebody said, "Good point."

Then the decision moved on without your name attached to it.

Here is why:

There is a scorecard being kept on you and nobody has shown it to you.

It is built from moments like these:

– You asked what next quarter looks like in a meeting about this one
– You answered for the business, not your corner of it
– You named the trade-off before anyone asked
– You connected the sales problem to the hiring problem
– You got a team that does not report to you to change direction

None of those are opinions.
They are things people watched you do.

Here is the part that stings.

You have probably done most of them this year.

In a 1:1.
In a document nobody finished.
In that hallway.

Seen once, it is a good moment.
Seen repeatedly, it becomes your reputation.

People don't promote what you know.
They promote what they repeatedly see.

Infographic titled “The Scorecard Nobody Showed You.” It lists five leadership behaviors—asking about next quarter, answering for the business, naming the trade-off, connecting problems across teams, and moving teams that do not report to you—with checkmarks under “You Did It” and empty boxes under “They Saw It.” The message emphasizes that people promote what they repeatedly see, not simply what you know.
