How to Stop Interruptions

October 09, 20251 min read

You can stop being interrupted.

Without being labeled “difficult.”

Getting talked over in meetings isn't just annoying. It damages your credibility and visibility.

Someone cuts you off mid-sentence.
Your idea vanishes.
And you wonder if you should have pushed back.

Reclaim your voice.
Without raising your voice:

🟠 Time-box your turn
"Let me finish this in 10 seconds" works because people can handle a specific wait time.
⇢ When you add a clear boundary, they're much more likely to pause.

🟠 Preview the payoff
"This will tie everything together" tells people why they should keep listening.
⇢ Studies show that when you promise brevity and relevance, brains relax.

🟠 Trade the mic
"I'll hand it right back to you" works because of reciprocity.
⇢ When you promise to return something, people are more willing to give it to you now.

🟠 Bridge to their point
"This connects to what you just said" changes the dynamic from competition to collaboration.
⇢ You're building on their idea, not fighting it.

🟠 Repair and resume
"Let me circle back and finish" treats the interruption like a normal hiccup, not an attack.
⇢ Linguists call this "conversational repair." You stay composed while reclaiming your turn.

🟠 Frame as helpful
"It's relevant to where we're headed" shows you're thinking about the group.
⇢ This matters especially for women leaders who get penalized for seeming either too aggressive or too passive.

The biggest mistake?

Staying silent or getting combative.
Neither builds respect.

Reclaim your time with calm, clear language.

When you do this well, people remember you belong at the table.

Your voice matters.
You can make it heard.

An infographic titled "How to Stop Interruptions: 9 science-backed phrases to protect your voice and your relationships." The graphic is a two-column list showing nine specific phrases to use to stop interruptions (e.g., "Let me just finish this thought quickly—I'll tie everything together.") and the brain science or psychological principle that explains why each phrase works.
