Why kindness builds unstoppable teams

October 15, 20252 min read

Fear gets quick results.

Kindness builds unstoppable teams.

I’ve seen both styles of leadership up close.
The loud, fear-driven managers who crush short-term goals…
and the quiet, kind ones who build teams people never want to leave.

Only one of them creates results that last.

Neuroscience doesn't lie:
When your team is afraid of you, their prefrontal cortex shuts down.

That's the part of the brain responsible for innovation, problem-solving, and creative thinking.

I've worked in both kinds of companies:

😳 Fear based:
– People getting fired
– Boss yells, “Who’s accountable?”
– Loyalty rewarded above everything

They struggled to grow; Projects ran behind. People worked against each other to save their own hide, and innovation suffered.

No one wanted to take accountability or they’d be next on the chopping block.

😊 Kindness based:
– Relationships mattered
– Meetings were fun
– Beating records was even more fun

Team didn't want to let each other down; They worked hard for each other and for the customers. Ten years later, we’re still friends.

Company broke industry records.

👉 The difference? Neuroscience.

Here's what happens in your team's brains under different leadership styles:

🧠 Fear-based leadership activates the amygdala
➝ Triggers stress hormones that impair higher brain functions

🧠 Kind leadership stimulates the prefrontal cortex
➝ Enables complex problem-solving and innovative thinking

🧠 Trust releases oxytocin
➝ Stanford’s findings: the “trust hormone” strengthens team connection
➝ Team cohesion rises while stress falls, boosting collaboration (Zak, 2011)

🧠 Psychological safety spurs results
➝ Google’s Project Aristotle: the #1 trait of high-performing teams
➝ Teams that feel safe to speak up take more risks and outperform peers

The data is clear:
Companies with high psychological safety are 21% more profitable and 17% more productive (Gallup, 2023).

What this means for you as a leader:

- Kindness isn’t ‘soft’. It’s a neuroscience-backed business strategy.
- Teams thrive when they feel safe, unlocking their creative potential, the very thing we need most today.
- Fear may drive short-term compliance, but it destroys long-term performance.

Next time you’re tempted to lead with fear, remember:
You might be switching off the very part of your team’s brain you need most.

The quote, attributed to Richard Branson, reads: "Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't want to." The phrases "Train people well enough" and "treat them well enough" are highlighted with teal boxes. A credit to "Jill Avey, Executive Coach" is in the bottom left corner.
