"You're too positive" is a strange criticism.
But I have heard it all my life.
People often assume my positivity is fake or that it comes naturally.
It’s not and it doesn't.
It’s a daily practice; a conscious choice that’s actually backed by decades of research.
👉 Here’s what science says about real, lasting positivity:
1. It's work, not magic
↳ Seligman at UPenn found that happiness comes from effort, not a personality trait.
↳ “Perpetually happy” people? They’re working at it behind the scenes.
2. It's misunderstood as denial
↳ UC Berkeley research shows American culture often rewards displays of "realism" over positivity
↳ True positivity faces difficulties, it just doesn’t get stuck in them.
3. It's different from toxic positivity
↳ Yale’s Center for Emotional Intelligence says genuine positivity isn’t about forced smiles
↳ It makes space for all emotions while maintaining perspective
4. It's scientifically validated
↳ Barbara Fredrickson’s research found that positive emotions boost our thinking, health (lower cortisol!), and resilience.
So, how do we practice positivity the right way?
Martin Seligman’s PERMA framework offers a research-backed roadmap:
P – Positive Emotion
Moments of joy, gratitude, hope fuel resilience and make life richer.
E – Engagement
Getting lost in meaningful activities (when time “flies by”) is deeply satisfying.
R – Relationships
Strong, authentic connections are among the top predictors of wellbeing.
M – Meaning
Serving something bigger than yourself gives life direction.
A – Accomplishment
Making and meeting goals (big or small) builds pride and drive.
You don’t have to max out all five.
What matters is intentionally building the mix that works for you at home, or at work.
How do I practice this?
– I choose positivity, daily
– Savor small pleasures
– Look for hope instead of worry
– Try to be easily delighted
– Prioritize sleep
– And yes, I quit sugar
Positivity is about meeting reality fully equipped with emotional intelligence and science-backed habits.
