I thought VP was the reward for being the best Director.
It turned out to be the opposite.

Every level of leadership is its own passage.

Not a bigger version of the last one.

A different job that asks you to give something up.

▪️ Time: Where your attention has to go.
▪️ Values: What you let yourself count as real work.

Skills are the easy part.
Values are where it stalls.

You can understand delegation completely and still not cross the passage.

Because you still believe the real work is catching every mistake yourself.

Watch what that looks like.

A Director makes the leap by getting sharper at the work.

– She reviews the deck line by line.
– She catches the error before it ships.
– She is the reason the function runs.

A VP has already left that behind.

– She builds managers who catch the error without her.
– She sets the direction the deck is arguing for.
– She spends the quarter making sure the people who decide can picture her running a business, not a team.

👉 Every passage you refuse to make sends one quiet message to the people who promote you.

“She belongs at the level below this one.”

The Director to VP leap is where this stalls the most.

And it stalls harder for women, because the same performance reads as ready in him and reliable in her.
